On behalf of the community, the sector, and everyone involved with or impacted by HIV, welcome. Working in the HIV sector may be one your most rewarding, challenging and meaningful work experiences; we certainly hope it will be!
But, if you’re new, there will be a lot to learn in the coming months. This can be intimidating. Thankfully, there are many resources available.
This guide is an attempt to build capacity in Ontario’s HIV sector by establishing a common core curriculum covering the following subjects:
- Intro to Sector/Sector Primer
- HIV 101 – Biomedical
- HIV 101 – Harm Reduction and Social determinants focused
- Confidentiality and Boundaries
- Harm Reduction – OHRN
- Hep C – CATIE
- ARAO – OODP
- LGBT Health
This guide provides a few quick facts on each of these topics, as well as links to further training and resources.
The subjects above are way too complex to cover in an hour or two, and it’s not our goal to overwhelm you. Instead, think of this guide as a jumping-off point for further investigation and a catalyst for questions. We’d suggest reviewing it with your supervisor to identify training requirements based on your specific role, agency mandate and community needs.
