On behalf of the community, the sector, and everyone involved with or impacted by HIV, welcome to the HIV sector. This work may be one your most rewarding, challenging and meaningful work experiences; we certainly hope it will be. But, if you’re new, there will be a lot to learn in the coming months, and this can be intimidating. Thankfully, there are many resources available.
This guide is an attempt to build capacity in Ontario’s HIV sector by establishing a common core curriculum covering the following subjects:
- Intro to the Sector/Sector Primer
- HIV 101 – Biomedical and Harm Reduction Social Determinants
- Harm Reduction
- Confidentiality & Boundaries
- Hep C Basics
The subjects above are too complex to cover in a few hours, and it’s not our goal to overwhelm you. Instead, think of this guide as a jumping-off point for further investigation and a catalyst for questions. We’d suggest reviewing it with your supervisor to identify training requirements based on your specific role, agency mandate and community needs. Your organization may have plans to do agency-wide training on specific topics; we recommend you focus on subjects that won’t be covered in-person.
Once you’ve established this basic groundwork of knowledge, this site can point you to a variety of other training sessions and modules offered by various agencies in the sector, and available at little or no cost.
